Last County is a crime thriller about an alcoholic named Abby (Kaelen Ohm) whose marriage has fallen on hard times and she separates from her husband Brian (Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll) and goes to live in her parent's rural country home. When Abby arrives at her parent's home things take a dark turn. Abby is held hostage by two drug dealers who are on the run from the police and must do everything she can to stay alive.

Last County tells a gripping story from the beginning and blurs the line between good guys and bad. Writers Matthew Kohnen and Sean Kohnen have written a story that will leave you on the edge of your seat and not sure who you should be rooting for. There's also a lot of humour as well to give the movie a bit of levity. Director Barrett Mulholland does a fantastic job weaving it all together.

Bennet (Gord Rand), one of the drug dealers holding Abby hostage, starts off being one of  the bad guys in the movie but he has a sympathetic heart that makes you feel for him as the movie progresses. His friend has been badly injured and they seek refuge in Abby's house until the heat dies down and they can make their escape.

When Abby finds a chance she rings the police to report two robbers are in her house, can they send someone out to save her and arrest the two criminals keeping her hostage? Or are the police just as bad as the two keeping her hostage? All Abby wants is for her nightmare to be over, but before the day is over she will have to become someone she didn't know she could be.

The Sheriff (Nicholas Cambell) thinks he has his criminals trapped and it's just a matter of sending one of his deputies to arrest them, but when it doesn't go to plan the entire department will have to get involved and there will be nothing but carnage that follows.

Mulholland builds the suspense perfectly as the movie grinds to its conclusion. The pace is excellent and the soundtrack keeps getting more intense as the action builds. For his directorial debut, Mulholland has crafted a fantastic film even though it doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. A damaged protagonist who is dealing with issues, a sympathetic villain who ends up not being so bad, and a corrupt police force who will do anything to get what they believe they are due. It's all here, but the humanity shown in the cast makes it feel original and worth an hour and a half of your time.

The characters are all portrayed by a great cast, but Abby goes through so much during the course of Last County, and her journey from addict to badass is so entertaining to watch. We get so many shots of her face throughout the movie and her reactions from terrified to stone-cold killer are really believable. She is the heart and soul of the movie but the rest of the cast does a great job of keeping you guessing how it will end.
